Hexham scent is an annual or biennial herb up to 60 cm in height. Leaves are described as trifoliate (3 leaflets) and flowers are pea like in shape and yellow in colour. Pods are small, 2-3 mm long and usually contain one seed. It is a weed of gardens, roadsides, fields, waste places, disturbed sites, wetlands, orchards and cultivated fields. Potentially allelopathic - reduced germination and growth of other plants.Hexham scent tolerates a range of soil types and is known to tolerate saline soils (3-6 dS/m). It is reported to have a preference (optimal growth) for neutral soils and soils that are well drained.
