Purple top is a common weed of roadsides, pastures, grasslands, open woodlands, riparian vegetation, crops, orchards, gardens and disturbed areas. It is a long-lived herbaceous perennial plant, that is upright and height ranges from 60 to 200cm. It is described as hardy and drought tolerant.

Purple top flowers are highly attractive to butterflies and other insects.
